The Choir and the Youth Orchestra “Collegium Musicum La Rioja” from Spain, was formed in 2006 when the University of La Rioja started a project to invite students to take part in a musical project. Soon students and teachers from the University, Conservatoire and from the different Music Schools of the county, Logroño, Calahorra and Haro, were part of this innovative didactic program. Now, the orchestra has more than 50 players and their philosophy is to work in co-operation to develop their artistic, musical and creative activities to promote values like team work, solidarity and individual hard work. The theme for tonight's concert is 20th century music, with some emphasis on Spanish and Latin American composers:

Alfredo Rodriguez Ugalde completed his violin studies at the Professional Conservatoire of La Rioja and latter at the Superior Conservatoire of Bilbao, with Professor Barbara Zienkiewice. He then started his career as an Orchestral Conductor with Professor Alexander Maschat. He has worked and conducted the Orchestra of Zaragoza’s University (1982-1984), Bilbao’s Chamber Orchestra (1988-1991), Calahorra’s Conservatoire Orchestra (1996-2006) & Youth Orchestra “Collegium Musicum La Rioja” (from 2006). He has conducted concerts in Spain, Belgium, Germany, France & UK. Hired by the “Juan March” Foundation (1987-1989), he designed the Theory and Practice of the Didactic Concerts with Albert Nieto & Menchu Mendizábal. He received an award from the Government of La Rioja, for his innovative education work: El Código Haydn (2006). Founder of the Cultural Association Rio Oja, which aim is to investigate and to promulgate the Folklore of La Rioja, he recorded 3 CDs. At present, he is a professor at the Professional Conservatoire of La Rioja, where he teaches History of Music and Chamber Music.
 
 
Abel Urzanqui Valdor studied violin and Singing at the Professional Conservatoire of La Rioja and Superior Music Conservatoire Padre Antonio Soler in San Lorenzo del Escorial. He then completed his Postgraduate studies in Hogheschool ver den Kunsten Utrecht (Holland). He was a member of the Orquesta de Cámara Carlos III, Gustav Mahler Orchestra, conducted by Claudio Abbado & Orquesta y Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid, with whom he recorded a CD with the tenor singer Plácido Domingo. At present, he is a professor at the Professional Conservatoire of La Rioja, where he teaches Chamber Music & Violin, he performs in Recitals with pianist Elvira Guarás & he is the Leader of the Youth Orchestra Collegium Musicum La Rioja.
