JAZZ UK REVIEW MAY 2011 BY DUNCAN HEINING

'Pianist Will Butterworth's 'Hereafter' (Music Chamber) is an elegiac trio set with strong backing from Peter Ibbetson and, variously, Marcus Penrose and Adam King on bass. This is beautifully delicate music from a bright young talent with an ear for melody and lyricism'

Press Release for ‘Hereafter’ by The Will Butterworth Trio

Music Chamber is proud to release the debut trio album of the critically acclaimed young pianist Will Butterworth.

Will Butterworth, best known for his work with drummer Dylan Howe re-interpreting the works of Stravinsky, is here found in familiar trio setting with young stars of the British scene; Adam King on bass  (Alan Barnes, Peter King, Leon Greening) and Peter Ibbetson on drums (Martin Speak, Rory Simmons) and a guest appearance by Marcus Penrose bass (Phil Robson, Bill Bruford).

The Music reflects Butterworth’s broad range of influences. On tunes such as ‘All our thoughts’ ‘Lie of the Land’ and ‘The Workshop’ simple melodies sit on complex ever changing harmony. While a more free approach can be heard on ‘Hereafter’ and Ibbetson’s ‘Sketch for William S’. On these tunes, a love of melody coupled with a contagious sense of adventure, lead the band to some fascinating places.

Butterworth treats standards as his own too.  Cole Porter’s ‘Everything I Love’ begins with a contrapuntal solo introduction and slowly develops into a fierce and swinging interpretation, but it is perhaps, the delicate reading of ‘I’m Through with Love’ that is the heart of the record.
